USA: Organic ketchup taste test - Five organic ketchups were put to the kid taste test. Did any of them get a big thumbs-up?

I was surprised to see how many brands of organic ketchup there were at the supermarket by my house that usually has very few organic and/or natural foods. I run in there for milk and bread once in a while, but not for much else. When I saw they had three different organic ketchups, I decided it was time to hold a taste test. I rounded out the selections from that store with a couple from Whole Foods.

We tested the five different organic ketchups against the Simply Heinz ketchup that my kids have been used to having. For dipping, I made my boys’ favorite oven roasted potatoes and breaded and fried some chicken tenders. We rounded the meal out with a mound of peas, and it was a meal just made for ketchup.

I asked my boys and my husband for two specific opinions. Which ketchup tasted most like what they were used to, and which ketchup tasted best. This is the first taste test of products that I’ve ever done where opinions ranged greatly.

•Food Emporium Trading Company Organic Ketchup with Agave ($3.99 for 24 oz) – This was my husband’s favorite of all the ketchups. I thought it was pretty good, too. The boys liked it but said it wasn’t like what they were used to. It was very thick and had good spiciness to it.

•Annie’s Naturals Organic Ketchup ($4.19 for 24 oz) – Both of my boys thought this was very similar to Heinz. My oldest son picked this as his absolute favorite and my younger son said it was pretty good. My husband and I thought it was pretty good, but not spectacular.

•Heinz Organic Tomato Ketchup ($2.69 for 15 oz) – No surprise, this tasted the most similar to the Simply Heinz. I’m sure they use the same spice combination in both ketchups. Everyone agreed that it tasted just like the Simply Heinz, but it was not anyone’s favorite. Although, all everyone said if they were going to eat a hot dog, this would be the one they’d reach for.

•365 Organic Tomato Ketchup ($1.99 for 24 oz) – While my husband and I thought this ketchup from Whole Foods was okay, both of my boys gave it a resounding “no.” It didn’t taste anything like what they thought ketchup should taste like.

•Muir Glen Organic Tomato Ketchup ($3.79 for 24 oz) – This was the ketchup that had us most divided. It was the favorite of my youngest son and me. My husband and oldest son didn’t like it all. It was much thicker than Heinz and had a richer flavor. My husband said it was more like a barbeque sauce than a ketchup in both texture and flavor.

Our conclusions? They were fairly mixed. Here are the few we could draw.

Tastes most like Heinz - The Heinz Organic is the clear winner here, but Annie’s came in a close second, particularly with my boys.

Best tasting overall – We were divided. My husband preferred the Food Emporium, my oldest liked the Annie’s, and my youngest and I liked the Muir Glen.

Least impressive – The 365 Organic.

Of course, this is a limited taste test done by four people. Your family’s opinion may differ.
